Volunteering opportunity on President's Day

Many of us volunteered on MLK Day, answering President Obama's call for a day of service.  Why not on Presidents' Day?  Please consider donating two hours of your time on Monday, February 16 to help remove trash and install fencing to protect a sand dune along the Ballona Wetlands (see below). The Ballona Institute (www.ballonainstitute.org), which has organized this day of service, is dedicated to protecting and teaching the public about the wetlands ecosystem in Playa del Rey.  

Please RSVP to Stacey Beggs at sbeggs@ucla.edu by Friday, February 13.  If you would like to carpool, please indicate this in your email.  Otherwise, please meet at the Shallow Water Nature Store at 1:00 pm.  Please wear UCLA gear, if you have some, and bring work gloves and a few trash bags (as well as water and sunscreen!).  Children are welcome. The event ends at 3:00 pm.

Ballona Wetland Preservation Event

Meet at 1 p.m. at the Shallow Water Nature Store in the Matilla Village Center, at the corner of Culver Boulevard and Vista del Mar in Playa del Rey.

Directions: Take Culver Boulevard west to the Matilla Realty Shopping Center, Park just beyond Gordon's Market, behind Matilla Realty. If you reach the light at Vista del Mar, you have gone too far. Turn right and make another right turn beyond the restaurant on the right. Drive down the driveway to the parking area.
Here are some of the opportunities on the day of service. During the two hour time period, you will probably have time for more than one activity.

1. Take a nature walk to learn about the habitat, ecology, and stewardship needs in this area of Los Angeles.
2. Remove trash from La Ballona Creek Estuary Channel and Del Rey Lagoon Park, to prevent litter on the beaches and pollution of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
3. Install protective fencing to protect a sand dune we are restoring.
